Pasadena Doo Dah Parade

Howdy, readers.  I attended the 35th Pasadena Doo Dah Parade (DDP) this past Saturday – Cafe Pasadena’s Believe It or Not!

As usual, I was a bit late. Which is disturbingly normal.

That I came to the parade is unusual. Some loyal readers may recall Cafe Pasadena is a parade supporter but rarely a parade goer.  I don’t feel bad since apparently the same can be said for the blogger friends I didn’t see there!  They know who they are.

There has to be a very good reason for me to wake up in the morning to catch a parade.  And there were a few goodies this year! A few whacky, but good, friends I know played significant roles this year, finally!:  Pasadena PIO Emeritus Ann Erdman was Grand Marshall, Newspaperwoman/Rock-N-Roller Michelle Mills played the part of Stephanie Edwards broadcast hostess with the mostess, and Patrizzi Intergarlictika somehow was made Queen for this Doo Dah Day!  Plus,…this wood bee the first DDP I’ve watched since they skipped their Old Pasadena location for the New Pasadena parade route!  Plenty of reasons, without any excuse, to show up.

However, please don’t get the impression I’m here to report on the 2012 DDP. I must first blog about the 32nd DDP of 2009!  You know, everything in it’s time and proper order.  Especially since I believe that was the last  DDP held in Old Town Pasadena.

But I will get to the 2012 parade version, sooner or later. Well, SOONER, of course!

The girl above was the tortilla pick em up champion of the 2012 Doo Dah Parade! Someone give her a job making tacos or on the Pasadena street maintenance department. Everyone was tossing and she was cleaning up.

Have you ever been to a Doo Dah Parade?  Were you among the crowd on Saturday?

Ansel Adams: Los Angeles Photographer

Dunno bout you, but the people I meet & become acquainted with mostly come from the creative/artistic label.  I don’t consider myself creative or artsy. The fact I have so much trouble writing/blogging these things for some of you only proves my point. Nevertheless, somehow these types just magically appear in my circle.  When the artist is ready, the dog will appear, I suppose.

As an example, I give you the past weekend at the newest Euro Pane Bakery & Cafe. I’m speaking with two girls. Sharing our photographs with each other. Turns out they both graduated from Art Center College of Design here in Pasadena! Graphic artists. See what I mean. I’ve come across many of these sort, from scientists to entertainers at Euro Pane.  Maybe that’s the problem – I need to change cafes!

Here’s a Cafe Pasadena’s Believe It or Not!: I’ve even come across a few on the blogosphere!. Is there no sacred ground left??  For example, our own Petrea blogs and also does, uh, whatever.  I mentioned her a few times here early on in her blogging career.  But there are many others I need to tell you to watch out for but for my lagging, lazy blogging. Admittedly if I had many more readers I’d feel more guilt and stress to “produce”.   So things could be worse.

Admittedly, most of these artsy people are talented. They can doodle, I can’t.  They can speak long or twisted sounding words that make you think you’re talking to a foreigner, or a cat. I talk only canine.  You can say one word to them, “action”, for example, and they can instantly turn into a nervous tearful breakdown!  Me, no can do. So, it’s only right I write about such artistic/creative behaviors here.

Which brings me to let y’all know about another creative guy, a professional shutterbug: Ansel Adams.  Sadly, Ansel is no longer with us but he left behind his calling card – wonderful photographs.  It was through another creative person making me aware of how she wanted to see this newest gallery opening on his Los Angeles photography.  Of course. So a group of creative’s, plus one, me, decided to check it out at the drkrm gallery in Downtown Los Angeles…

Opening night reception on Spring Street, DTLA

Drkrm Photo Ad This is what we came for: Ansel Adams Los Angeles

It was to run only through mid-March. The show will now go until April 21st!  There’s your 2nd chance.

Adams made his name via his nature photography, especially of Yosemite. But this presentation from the Ansel Adams collection of the LA Public Library would show a little known side of his – street/urban photography – specifically, Los Angeles circa 1940.

The night is still young but it’s already busy! Can we get in? Well, we got in, no problem! Most attendees actually look to be looking at these black and whites (a good sign!).

Whereas Adams loved to shoot the natural environment, these city images were taken on commission for Fortune magazine. The article was called, “City of Angels”, of all things!    About 200 images are in the library collection, with 60 on display here at the drkrm gallery.

But we arrived early relative to the group which included the creative person who “planned” this whole idea.  So while we waited for them I started shooting up the dark streets of Los Angeles. That’s one shot of a lady shutterbug.

A couple approached us and asked, “is that parking across the street (gallery)?”  Sure is! I parked there. it’s the closes thing to the gallery, I said.  “How much you pay?”  Just $5, said I. “Oh, we just parked 2 blocks away and paid $15!”  They were from the OC.

P1670983a

The Letter.  Ansel Adams wrote to the Los Angeles Public Librarian to basically, “take these photographs off my hands! Please!!”   He estimated the value (as of 1960) of this collection of his 200+ pictures to be as low as $100!  Obviously Adams felt these were some of his throw-aways.

As you can see we had decided to head inside.  Without our leader & her group. Patience ran empty and my thoughts were beginning to shift to food. They had stopped for a ride(s) on Angels Flight and obviously were having too much fun going up & down, up & down,…up & down, and couldn’t get off.  They did make it to Clifton’s Cafeteria, however. I know Clifton’s is closed but they got in – such was the night.

The drkrm gallery owner, John Matkowsky, was also the curator of this event. The library approached him about this project. Talk about good fortune!  Matkowsky says he tried to duplicate them the way Adams would have printed them. They look good is all I know.

Those not particularly into looking or buying photographs had their own room in the gallery: Wine & Snacks!

I was very happy to meet this pair of Abercrombie & Fitch girls.  More so when they told me they were from the Pasadena area. A colorful highlight of an otherwise black N white night.

Back in the good old days of L.A. it appears the girls were ready to meet, drink, and make-out.  Love them old traditional values.

Btw, did someone mention Art Center College of Design??  I learned Ansel Adams was very technically proficient at his craft to point he actually taught taught photography at Art Center!

SRO

But I digress…my height has it advantages.

There is a wealth of material on Ansel Adams career, and this particular gallery event and its photographs.  Check out the L.A. Times, L.A. Weekly, as well as the drkrm gallery link above, just as a start.  This article is just a tiny taste of the exhibit.  And it won’t be as busy as opening night, so don’t let people keep you away.

A few in the audience were more than lookie-loos. They exchanged greens for black N whites.  Art, like the art of politics for example, is also about buying & selling; money.  Back 50 yrs ago when Ansel Adams donated these hundreds of photographs to the L.A. Public Library he estimated their entire value to be worth at least $100.   Nowadays, Adams’ throwaways are catching $2,500 for a single framed print.

Well, it was about time we left this scene.  I have more articles I need to write on my creative friends, including on another gallery of artists in DTLA, then on another friend of mine which is only a year late in telling you about! But, wow, now I need to catch my breath! Catch some L.A. fresh night aire.  Outside the gallery I saw this massive long line down Spring Street waiting to come inside! I must’ve been very lucky to be able to come In-N-Out as I pleased. Or maybe it was just meant to be.

Recommended: 3 Thumbs Up.

Okay, I’m done here. Another one down, a few more to go!

Pasadena Waldorf School

My good blogging buddy, TR the AltadenaBlogger, did some good work in mentioning the Waldorf School in his newspaper column this past Sunday.  Which reminded me of something…looking for something to do this weekend? I have you locals covered for Saturday.

A beautiful young lady from Pasadena with a wonderful old house, and talented youngsters, also wanted me to mention this special community event dear to her heart.  What is it??  You old timers probably already know. But for those of you not so old…

The 26th Annual Elves’ Faire!!

Presented by the Waldorf School of Pasadena. It only comes around once a year – the week before Thanksgiving.

What is it?  Basically the Elves’ Faire turns the school grounds into a medieval faire grounds! Fun & games, food, shopping, entertainment, and the Silent Auction of all sorts of wonderful donated items!! Something for every kid from junior to senior citizen!  The school uses this annual event as a fundraiser mainly to assist with students tuition.

P1510756a

When?  This Saturday from 10am – 4pm!

How much?  Well, admission is FREE. But if you really want to get into the fun & games, food, holiday gifts, prize drawings, & much more if you choose, you’ll have to take out your dollar bills. But once you see what is waiting for you, you’ll say this is a good deal! Like the super Silent Auction!

You can bid for items created by the parents & students such as clothing & shawls; services donated by local businesses such as massage, facials; gift cards/certificates to restaurants for example, consultations, tickets/passes to events, and so on! This is just a fraction of the hundreds of items donated on behalf of the Waldorf.

Where is it?  Waldorf School of Pasadena, of course…Wait a second! Ok, for those who love even more questions I have a little something for you below! Phone number, links, address, etc:

The Pasadena Waldorf School offers a developmental and experiential education in which the arts & relationships are fully integrated for children Preschool through Grade 8 on a historic (ye olde William A. Scripps estate) wooded campus.  Although it’s Pasadena’s Waldorf School, it’s located just across the border in Altadena and the student come from the Greater Pasadena & L.A. area.  The Waldorf School will expand in Fall 2012 to include a high school!

What I’ve said it in black & white pales in comparison to the color & fun you’ll experience by coming out this Saturday. So, I’m asking y’all not to miss it – even if you have no time but 30minutres. Come and check the Elves’ out at least once. You’ll find it difficult not to come a second time!  And if you have school age children, well you just might find yourself wanting to get them into Waldorf

Happy Hollydays!

If you can’t come to the Art reception on Friday (shame on you, especially if you’re of the artistic or creative bent!) and grab a bite of good food while there, there’s another chance to get out of the house.

The retail at the new Raymond Renaissance on Holly in Old Town Pasadena is celebrating the beginning of the holidays with a holiday sale “party.”  This Thursday evening, the 10th, from 5-9pm.  Some may recall I briefly wrote about this area a few months past.

Maude Woods (est. 2009), The Market on Holly (est. 2011), and the new kid on this block Therapy Boutique (last month) are the retailers inviting you to visit and say, “Hi!”, especially if you’ve never been.

Unique Home Furnishings & Gifts, and Nice People.

Is Maude Woods the owner, you ask? Well, Maude is related to the owner.  She is an artist and the great grandmother of the owner.  In fact, the owner (a FIDM grad) is also related to the co-owner of The Market on Holly – she’s his wife. Can you believe the coincidences!

Will I be in attendance?  Not for the entire four hours!  I haven’t won the Lottery yet. But I will win I assure you! – cuz nobody deserves, or needs, to win it like I do.  Besides I’m too busy & lazy.  But there will be food, so, cough…expect me to drop in for a bit, sooner or later. Hopefully we’ll meet & break bread together.

Unfortunately I won’t have any direct information for you on the newest addition to the Raymond Renaissance: Therapy Clothing. They discouraged my taking of pictures. Although it’s very rare that I experience this response, especially here in Pasadena, I respect their wishes.  It’s their business!  I suggest you find out more by visiting their store and website, or checking out what others think on a review site like Yelp, etc.

Artisan market & cafe: beer/wine, breakfast, lunch, dinner, deli, artisan market. And more good people.

The Market on Holly has these great $10 tasting specials on the Final Fridays of each month which I continue to miraculously find a way to miss!  The Taste of Provence tasting back in September was one I really wanted to attend. Heard it was busy that night. Yeah, I bet.

My readers, from local to international, know I feel about Macarons. Most of you have now seen & tasted the light. Although not an everyday item in their bakery section, we have another place in Pasadena to bite into a taste of France.

P1360939ab

Besides maybe having the grand opportunity to see me, what’s in it for you if you come out Thursday evening?

  • Ck out exactly what each store can offer you
  • Have a few bites of good food!
  • Ck out the brand new take-out addition at The Market
  • Oh, and you can take advantage of a 20% discount from each store. I’m unclear if this applies to everything or only to select items
  • Meet the owners & employees. I’ve met the owners & the staff of Maude Woods & The Market on Holly and so can personally attest to their goodness & friendliness
  • It’s another opportunity to build community in the great town of Pasadena
  • You may have other reasons to come on down

P1420283a

I hope each new business succeeds, especially in this tough economy. Come out Thursday evening between 5 & 9pm to show your support!

Now I have to finish my Halloween candy. Btw, have you locked away all your ghosts & other spooky paraphernalia until next Halloween??
